Arturo Releases Two Open Source Projects for STAC 1.0 - Arturo

Here at Arturo, we are big supporters of the Open Source Software (OSS) community and Open Source Standards. Standards like those from the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and other de facto standards from the OSS and geospatial community have been critical building blocks of solutions we’ve built and continue to underpin our work at Arturo.

Over the last few years, one of the most exciting standards we’ve seen emerge is the Spatio-Temporal Asset Catalog (STAC). STAC is a standard aimed at common metadata and API mechanics to search and access geospatial data and last week, the specification reached a 1.0 release candidate. This release provides a stable foundation for catalog maintainers and software implementations to begin the process of transforming STAC from a specification to a fully-fledged ecosystem. Much of this ecosystem work is coalescing around stac-utils, a new GitHub organization that provides the STAC community a space to host, maintain, collaborate, and build the next generation of cloud native geospatial tools with STAC at their core.

For the past two years, Arturo has been actively working with STAC, resulting in the development of two open source projects: a set of data models for the specification as well as a FastAPI backed API implementation.  We are happy to announce that we have transferred these projects to the stac-utils repository to better align ongoing development with the STAC ecosystem roadmap.  During the move, we are also renaming and restructuring the projects based on feedback from the community.  We look forward to continuing to drive these projects forward in continued collaboration with the STAC community.

You may find the new projects in the stac-utils repository:

As we’ve watched the discussion around STAC evolve it became clear to us that this would be part of our next generation geospatial services at Arturo. We are all thrilled about a truly cloud-native geospatial solution and our team has worked diligently to implement tools that will allow us to realize the benefits of STAC across our architecture. We are excited for the STAC 1.0 release and continuing to take part in the development and adoption of STAC as it progresses.
